Rescuers Save Neglected The Kitten With Rare Blindness And Deafness, Lonely And Abandoned

Rescuers aided a neglected cat with a rare condition that rendered it both blind and deaf, sparing it from a life of anguish.

One autumn day, as she tended to her feral cat colony, Sarah Richardson spotted a mysterious new cat on the lookout for food.

A single glance at the cat alerted Sarah that something was amiss. What she discovered left her utterly shocked.

The situation was far worse than anyone could have imagined...

Sarah Richardson, a compassionate cat rescuer based in Little Rock, AR, was diligently feeding her TNR cat colony when an unfamiliar feline suddenly made an appearance.

Sarah's intuition immediately kicked in, sensing that something was awry. The cat exhibited peculiar behavior and seemed to struggle with navigating its surroundings.

Sarah's determination to help the cat grew, but she knew she had to be strategic.

Recognizing the need for caution, she set up a gentle trap, fully aware that the cat required assistance.

After five nights of patient waiting, the enigmatic white cat finally entered the trap!

Once Sarah was able to get a closer look, she was taken aback...

It became evident to Sarah that the cat was both blind and deaf. Remarkably, the cat had no knowledge of being trapped.

It roamed within the confines of the trap, bumping into the sides as if unaware of its surroundings.

How had it managed to survive if it couldn't see or hear?

While visibly malnourished, Sarah found no other significant injuries on its body.

However, its eyes were in a dreadful state.

"The condition was truly, truly severe," shared Sarah. "Its eyes were practically shut."

Despite the evident pain, the cat's gentle nature and beautiful white fur reminded Sarah of Olaf from Frozen, thus becoming its name.

The next day, Sarah wasted no time in taking Olaf to the veterinarian for much-needed medical attention and answers.

The vet's diagnosis confirmed Sarah's suspicions—Olaf was both deaf and blind.

Entropion, a rare eye condition causing the eyelids to fold inward, was identified as the root cause. Consequently, the inward growth of eyelashes exacerbated the damage to Olaf's eyes with every movement.

There was no doubt that Olaf had endured excruciating pain.

Given the significant damage already sustained by its eyes, it remained uncertain how much vision Olaf would be able to regain.

As a temporary solution, the vet sewed Olaf's eyelids in place, preventing further harm to its eyes.

It was evident that Olaf felt much more comfortable without the constant irritation.

However, the surgery required to fully address Olaf's condition came with a hefty price tag.

Securing funding for the procedure posed a considerable challenge.

In the realm of cat rescue, cats like Olaf are often euthanized due to the lack of financial resources for expensive surgeries.

Undeterred, Sarah reached out to Susan from FuRR, Feline Rescue & Rehome in Central Arkansas.

When she sought their assistance for Olaf, they wholeheartedly welcomed him into their care.

Through FuRR, Sarah found the right specialist to perform Olaf's eye surgery.

Following the successful surgery, Olaf was liberated from the constant agony caused by his condition and regained partial vision!

"In the first two weeks after the surgery, Olaf's eye appeared a bit rough," shared Sarah. "But when it finally opened, his beautiful, big blue eyes were revealed."

Every veterinarian who encountered Olaf marveled at its remarkable survival in the wild, despite being both deaf and blind.

At the time of its rescue, Olaf was estimated to be between two to three years old.

This fact served as a testament to Olaf's resilience and unwavering will to live.

With a partial restoration of its eyesight, a brighter future awaited Olaf.

As Olaf recuperated from the surgery, Sarah collaborated with FuRR to find the perfect home for him

Having had limited exposure to humans before his rescue, Olaf remained skittish and required socialization.

Finding a suitable home for Olaf posed a challenge, but FuRR devised an excellent solution.

They determined that it would be best for Olaf to be adopted by their organization, considering his special needs.

"He was given the opportunity to move to a cat sanctuary," Sarah shared with enthusiasm. "Now, he resides in a dedicated cat room with a catio and even has a feline companion! He looks absolutely magnificent now."

In the sanctuary, Olaf thrived, indulging in plentiful meals and receiving the pampering he deserved. From this point forward, he would always be safe and cherished.

Thanks to Sarah's unwavering determination and FuRR's support, Olaf was saved from an uncertain fate and granted a loving home where he could flourish.

Never again would Olaf have to worry about falling ill or enduring the hardships of street life.

With the aid of FuRR, Olaf and numerous other cats facing challenging medical conditions were given a second chance at life.

FuRR's mission encompassed rescuing cats subjected to abuse, abandonment, or slated for euthanasia in shelters.

They actively promoted and practiced TNR (trap, neuter, return) to control overpopulation and improve the well-being of feral cats.

Their tireless efforts focused on providing compassionate care, medical treatment, and socialization to cats in need.

Ultimately, their goal was to find forever homes for all adoptable cats, ensuring they would receive the love they deserved.
